Building Cool Rooms The Right Way

Building the box for your Cool Room, Cold Store, clean room or spray room can be pretty straight forward.

Despite being a two person job, because the Insulated Wall & Roof Panels are heavy and bulky, the panels are relatively easy to join together with Aluminium extrusions and rivets.

Cool Panels has all the aluminium joiners & components you need to build ‘the box’.

Wait there, is it that easy?

If you are handy on the tools, the answer is YES. The box is not a complicated structure to put together.

BUT, there is a lot more to it than riveting together a few panels. If, for example, it’s a cool room, you will need to create a thermal envelope while a freezer has different dynamics.

So firstly, determine what the box will be used for and where it will be located.

For example, will it be used as a cool room, freezer, clean room or spray booth; will it be inside or out; is it a permanent fixture or transportable i.e. skid or trailer?

The answers to these questions dictate the choice of materials and construction required.

We recommend working with your builder &/or engineer to determine to right construction method, and then supply us with a list of materials to quote.

The different styles of Cool Rooms

The usage and location of your cool room will affect the design and construction of the box you build and therefore what materials you will need.

For example, there’s a big difference when it comes to the type of roof you need depending on the location.

Outdoors you’ll probably be advised to have a patio style roof joined to the wall panels. Inside the roof might be cool room panels sitting in a head cut on the wall panels.

The Door is also important (and expensive!).

Does it need to be a sliding or swinging door, and does it need to be big enough for you or a pallet or a forklift?

And don’t forget the floor. Just bolting to a concrete slab creates issues so it is important to keep your thermal envelope in mind.

More than a big eski

It might act like a big eski but your cool room, freezer or cold store has a lot going on.

A refrigeration mechanic is essential for expert advice on cooling capacity, appropriate temperature ranges, air circulation, heat loads and more.

Building a Spray Booth or Clean Room

A simpler build build but sometimes with challenges.

For example, some of these types of boxes are built inside a shed. They’re usually bigger rooms which means span becomes an issue and you might need to suspend the roof from the shed’s ceiling.
